5th HKU-Pasteur Cell Biology Course Call for Application is now Open (Deadline: 1 February 2013

We are soliciting applications for the 5th HKU-PASTEUR CELL BIOLOGY COURSE (April 14-26, 2012). The major objective of this course is to present imaging technologies utilized to identify key steps involved in infection. The course will also highlight, at a theoretical level, how imaging and image analysis are heavily influencing the investigation of host-pathogen interactions, deciphering cellular pathways and architecture, and visual based screening approaches.

In the practical work, two bacterial pathogens (Shigella and Salmonella)  will be used to demonstrate different aspects of the successive stages during host-pathogen interaction at the cellular level such as motility, cell contact, uptake, intracellular survival and modulation of host gene response. Participants will use the data from cell-based assays and apply image processing algorithms using ImageJ to discriminate differing stages in infection.

There is no registration fee and course and travel application forms can be downloaded from: http://www.hkupasteur.hku.hk/index.php/Teaching/Courses/5th_hku-pasteur_cell_biology_course

To prepare the best application and maximize your chances of success, tips for a successful application can be also downloaded from: http://www.hkupasteur.hku.hk/courses/application_tips.pdf

XIII International Krutyn Summer School, Poland, May 21-27, 2013 – "Advanced photo- and electrically active molecular and nano-materials at the interface with living systems: challenges and promises for the future bio-medicine" - is organized by the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” Italy, Polish Supramolecular Chemistry Network Foundation, and the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland. The School is conceived as a high-level and highly intensive scientific event focusing on cutting-edge know-how on organic & hybrid materials for bio-medicine. This Summer School aims at the state-of-the-art training in the form of lectures and consulting sessions designed for Ph.D. students and young researchers seeking to reinforce their knowledge and skills in the exciting frontier field of molecular photonic/electronic materials and active nanostructures at the interfaces with biology and living systems, mainly for bio-medical applications (diagnosis, therapy, cells and tissues communications, staining, sensing and detection). Top experts from different scientific backgrounds in this interdisciplinary area will deliver lectures and consulting sessions.

Application is now Open. Registration Deadline: March 15th

The 2nd Italian-Swedish Workshop on Engineered Nanomaterials will take place at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm on June 15 and 16, 2012, and we now invite registrations to this event. Please note that participation is free of charge but registration is mandatory, and space is limited. The workshop is co-chaired by Prof. Bengt Fadeel, Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet and Prof. Antonio Pietroiusti, University of Rome Tor Vergata.

The main lectures of the workshop, given by six Italian and six Swedish leading scientists in the field of nanosafety and/or nanomedicine are intended to give the audience a comprehensive and critical overview of the state-of-the-art, integrated with current data based on the personal experience of the speakers in each respective field. The workshop will also feature a series of short presentations by selected participants including several junior scientists, principally from Sweden.

The workshop is a follow-up to the successful event at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2010. Please see the attachment for further information. Registartion deadline May 1.
